How does Levoplant™ work?
1. Two small rods (each about the size of a matchstick) are inserted under the skin of the woman’s upper, inner arm by a trained provider.
2. The rods slowly release levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin. Levonorgestrel is the same ingredient used in oral contraceptive pills, emergency contraceptive pills, and intrauterine systems; it is one of the best-understood and longest-studied ingredients used for contraception.
Levonorgestrel works by:
1. Inhibiting ovulation
2. Inhibiting implantation of the fertilized egg, and
3. Thickening the cervical mucus so sperm cannot pass
